UCAC celebrates 75 years

UCAC was established in Cardiff in 1940 by a group of teachers who saw the need for a teachers’ union that would correspond to the specific needs of teachers living and working in Wales.
On 14 December 2015, UCAC will celebrate its 75th birthday.  The aims that were established during the first meeting, chaired by Mr Gwyn M. Daniel, UCAC's first General Secretary, are still crucial to the union's work to this day.

The following is a translation from the Minutes Book: "A good number of teachers of every grade from Elementary School to University came together at T?’r Cymry, Gordon Street, Cardiff at 1.30 on Saturday, December 14, 1940 to establish the Union. "

As Rhodri Llwyd Morgan states in his article establishing UCAC’s Archive 1940 – c.1980 (Amser Egwyl, Issue 1, December 2000):– "At the time of its establishment, UCAC was a pioneering organisation. UCAC was the first professional trade union to be established in Wales by Welsh people for Wales. It represented a body that insisted on concentrating minds on the educational and cultural needs of Wales".

To commemorate 75 years since its establishment, UCAC will launch an online digital archive containing photographs, documents, posters and various publications.

The union is calling upon current members, former members, families of the founders of UCAC, and individuals who have links to the union to search for photographs, documents and ephemera relating to the union.

UCAC will be scanning and recording all items received, in partnership with People's Collection Wales, over the upcoming weeks, and with permission, will publish the items online. UCAC encourages people to get in touch if they have relevant material: 01970 639 950 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The online archive will be launched officially on 14 December 2015.
