Warm welcome for Minister’s change of heart on devolution of teachers’ pay and conditions

UCAC education union has responded positively to a statement by the Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis, which broadly welcomes the principle of devolving school teachers’ pay and conditions.

Elaine Edwards, UCAC’s General Secretary said “We’re extremely pleased that the Minister is beginning to see the advantages of taking on this responsibility – and that he agrees with the recommendation of the Silk Commission on this issue.

“Michael Gove is in the process, to all intents and purposes, of destroying the England-and-Wales pay system for teachers – including abolishing the national pay scales.

“UCAC’s view – and apparently that of the Education Minister – is that a national system of pay and conditions for teachers in Wales would allow us to re-establish a fair, consistent and workable system across the country.

“We look forward to working with the Welsh Government and others to ensure that this responsibility, and that finances that go with it, are devolved as soon as is reasonably practicable – and to establishing a system that works for Wales.”
