International Summit on the Teaching Profession 2017

29 March 2017

UCAC part of the Welsh Government’s deputation at the International Summit on the Teaching Profession

UCAC’s General Secretary, Elaine Edwards will fly to Edinburgh this week as part of Education Secretary Kirsty Williams’ Welsh deputation at the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP).

The annually held summit has this year organised by the Scottish Government, the UK Government, Education International and the OECD and will see delegates fly to Scotland from all corners of the globe. The theme for the summit will be "Empowering and Enabling Teachers to Deliver Greater Equity and Improved Outcomes for All".

“The summit will include discussions on what do teachers need in terms of professional learning and development, now and in the future, to support their work and also striving for sustainable excellence and equity in learning,” said Elaine Edwards.

“Of particular interest will be what can governments and unions do to ensure the most appropriate national structures and policy environments are in place to support this?” she added.

“It is a privilege to represent the teachers of Wales with the Cabinet Secretary at an international conference like this at a difficult time for the teaching profession. The numbers who choose teaching as a career has dropped dramatically, while the numbers choosing to leave the profession has increased significantly. I look forward to mature discussions and hopefully some pointers that may offer a way ahead for us in Wales.”
